He's 38 in 1891, 48 in 1901, and 58 in 1911 - all of which indicate
(unless my arithmetic's out!) that although he could indeed have been
born on 1st April it wasn't 1854, but 1853. In 1911 he had been married
32 years, so his marriage was around 1879.
Further to Caroline Bradford's advice, if he's your great grandfather
you presumably have a birth certificate already for whichever of his
sons is your grandfather? If not, I'd get that one.
And how do you know his middle name was Walter?
