Subject: [Ess] Brought Up by the Parish?
Date: Fri, 14 May 2010 18:06:09 -0700

I have a gal born 1792, both parents died 1802 and 1804, West Hanningfield. She states in a newspaper article shortly before her death that she was "brought up by the parish. When she was 10 she was sent to service". What does that mean exactly? Orphanage, workhouse...or should I be looking for another relative - all pre 1841 census. I don't see any parish chest films for West Hanningfield in the LDS catalogue. Many thanks in advance for any advice. Sylvia
