You'll easily get back beyond 1870 from the comfort of your own living
room now :))

Three key sites to book mark are those of the FreeUK group:

www.freebmd.org.uk (GRO indexes 1837 to 1983, images also available)
www.freecen.org.uk (censues from 1841-1901)
www.freereg.org.uk (Parish registers from the earliest date available
to about 1900)

All three projects are volunteer lead so are not yet complete.
Updates are made about once a month, so keep going back to check.

FreeBMD is currently up to 1930.

If you previously subscribed to Ancestry, you'll find their database
has increased tremendously. Likewise 1837online (now known as
www.findmypast.com) has expanded way beyond the GRO indexes.
