I have just received a birth certificate of Alexander WARD b. 1838 Barking Essex to William WARD fisherman and Lucy nee Williams. I purchased the certificate to try to break down a brickwall as I had not made the leap of connecting this family together and as Alexander was the first child born within the civil registration it was the only way to find out the mothers nee name ( my g.g.grandmother) there were 4 children born before Alexander. The unusual thing on the birth certificate is that it gives (I think) a possible previous marriage and reads under mother "Lucy Ward lock/leck Harden formerly Williams". Now this could be an occupation as it could also read lock Warden. The area that they lived was very close to the water in Barking and there was a lock - perhaps I am clutching at straws ;-)

Is anyone researching WARD in the Barking area . Also present at the birth was Ann Wakeling who I can't find connected to the family.

Alexander WARD left Barking and went to Grimsby as a fisherman where he lived the rest of his life, but to date have not connected to any relatives.

Has anyone ever seen an occupation of a mother on a birth certificate before - or anyone want to take a look?

Thanks
