They probably did marry but if they didn't, mum could have been
telling porkies by pretending to be married when she wasn't. If she
was confident enough, the registrar wouldn't question what he was
being told, especially if he didn't know the family well or at all.

Have you looked on FreeBMD for the mother's marriage entry? It's
possible that they transcribed her entry but not the groom's or he's
been omitted from the GRO index.

I had a fairly recent example of just that. One of my husband's
cousins wasn't listed in the marriage index but his wife was. She was
divorced so their children had her maiden name listed. Thankfully she
was listed under both her maiden and former married names enabling me
to find her previous marriage as well :))
