Hello Lisa.

I'm not researching any of your names specifically, but have looked at a
couple of record sources for you.

Firstly, though, I can tell you that PEGRUM (occasionally PEGRAM and
rarely PIGRAM - all versions pronounced PEA-grm) is an old Waltham Abbey
name (it's a variant of 'Pilgrim', reflecting old local dialect. These
days the pronunciation of Pilgrim would be more Cockneyfied, something
like PIW-grim, though we obviously never liked sounding our L's in these
parts!).

HALE, however, is not a local name. There are no HALES at all in the
1841 census of WA, so presumably your family had grown up, married and
moved away by then. I don't have marriage or christening records to hand
for that period, but can tell you that a John HALE, infant, was buried
here on 1st September 1818. His address was given as Quaker Lane, so now
you know what part of town they lived in. There were two other HALE
burials here in the period 1813-1878, but neither match up with your
family.

There were a great many PEGRAM/UMs in both the 1841 census and the
burial index I have. Most were PEGRUMs, except for only one or two
PEGRAMs; however I would say that either spelling could apply to any
family, and the surname form isn't significant in itself, at least as
regards early 19th century records.

There seem to be several distinct groups of the name, each in a
different part of this large parish, which at that time included four
hamlets (Holyfield, Upshire, High Beech and Sewardstone) besides the
town itself (though some of these are now parishes in their own right).
The PEGRUMs lived either at Copped Hall Green (called "HLG" in the table
below) or at Honey Lane Green (called "HLG" below), both near to
Upshire. Another group lived at Holyfield, whilst others lived in the
town itself.

Here's a quick table of basic data:

1841 CENSUS
Variant .. Qty .. Residence
PEGRAM .... 11 .. all at CHG
PEGRUM .... 31 .. Town 11, HLG 10, Holyfield 6, CHG 2, Sewardstone 2
PILGRIM .... 2 .. Town

BURIALS 1813-1878
Variant .. Qty .. Residence
PEAGRAM .... 1 .. Edmonton Workhouse
PEGRAM ..... 2 .. CHG 1, HLG 1
PEGRUM .... 26 .. HLG/Upshire/Galley Hill 8, CHG 6, Holyfield 6, Town 5,
other 1

Your Mary might have been roughly 60 years old in 1841, so here's a list
of 1841 census PEGRAMs of a roughly similar age who could possibly be
her siblings:

HO107/341
James PEGRUM, 55, millwright, Sewardstone Street (book 6 folio 39 page
29)
John PEGRUM, 60, carpenter, Highbridge Street (b6 f4 p1)
Thomas PEGRUM, 60, ag lab, Peacocks Lane (now Wood Green Road), Honey
Lane (b10 f21 p6)
Thomas PEGRUM, 80, labourer, Sewardstone Street (b6 f35 p21)

Of course, proving any link between these and your Mary would require
further work. Of the burials, one was of Quaker Lane at the time that
your HALES were there (Michael PEGRUM, buried 9 Oct 1817 aged 14). There
may be nothing in this, or his family may just have known your HALES as
neighbours. He might even have been your Mary's nephew. Perhaps also
worth noting is that Quaker Lane is a side road off of Sewardstone
Street, which might bring some of the census entries into the frame as
well.

Sorry not to have given you what you most wanted - info on Mary - but I
hope some of this answer is of interest. I'm sending you the complete
list of census and burial entries offlist.

Regards,
Lawrence

Hi listers,

Is anyone researching the surname PEGRAM? I have a Mary PEGRAM on my
tree. She married Thomas HALE 15 Nov 1806, Waltham Abbey. Thanks to a
very kind lister, I know of four of their sons - Joseph (chr 1812)
Thomas (chr 1815), John (chr 1817), and James (chr 1819) - but so far I
know nothing else about Mary.

I'd be very grateful for any information.

With thanks,
Lisa
