Hi, I hope this post is of interest to some. I have a grandfather JAMES MEE
who was injured in the 1st World War, and I knew that he was placed in a
Southend seafront Palace Hotel, was was used for injured naval servicemen to
recuperate. I went to an exhibition in Southend yesterday and saw photos of
the place taken at the time, and commentary told me that servicemen would
line up on the balcony as they were convalescing and locals would throw
chocolate and cigarettes to them. I also understand more than 4,000 service
men were helped there during the war. The hotel is still there.
If you go to Southend Museums web page, and click on Museum News, there is
info about the damage to the town and some 1st World War history
Going back to my family, my grandafther vowed that if he survived the war he
would move his family from Londons grimy and noisy East End to Southend, and
we are still here 80 odd years later!
