I too am a long term member of GR, and on the whole think that it is great at what it does.
A few of points to remember.
1) There is an option to hide details of living relatives, and to specify how old someone without a date of reath has to be before they are assumed to be dead
2) Some people take a while to reply to a message through GR. I have taken well over a month at times if work/family holidays/death in the family have taken precedence over anything to do with family history.
3) Some people upload a tree and then do not renew their membership, and so do not reply
4) Everything on GR is just a clue and needs to be confirmed by your own documentary evidence.
5) Those who demand and do not give, in the long run, receive less than those who are generous.
I have found numerous cousins, near and far, and one or to strange coincidences through the GR Hot Matches, but I also find, every 2 weeks, loads of people with the same names and birth years as my relatives, who are not related at all. I am getting to hate my John Wilsons for that reason.
For censuses and BMDs though, I would say go with ancestry.co.uk as it is the overall cheapest way to see all that is available. Despite the sometimes less than perfect transcriptions.
Cheers

But I never heard anything from the 3rd party who had posted the info, not even to say not the same. It was a shame because I've not seen her for roughly 43 years when we were both very small - she's split with her father and recently become a mother.
