Hi Barbara,
The official registrations of birth began September 1837 in the UK
Prior to that the records were of baptisms, burials and marriages were
recorded in the Parish Church.
So the first question is where did Joshua come from exactly. If you know the
place then you can check the Parish registers.
Next question - do you have an LDS Church near you to access their family
history room. If so you can check the LDS websites library catalogue to see
if the LDS have filmed the parish registers.

Just checked and the LDS have Parish registers available filmed for
Navestock.
Also there is a searchable database on Essex Govt website where you can
login as a guest and search. But nothing is complete and things go up on
websites constantly.

Seax shows a few pryors in Navestock, no Joshua though, but when you get a
better idea about the family some may tie in somewhere.
