Few register offices do take plastic or online applications. There
are two offices that won't look up historical certs, one is Islington
and the other (IIRC) is Hackney.

However, both can be forced to do so if you know the right route to
take which is to contact the GRO in Southport, explain the situation,
and ask that the "appropriate person" contact the register office.
You then get a contact from the register office who will then look up
the information. It's long winded but if that's what it takes to make
them do the job they are legally obliged to do, then I'll do it.
