Hi Heather
The problem with ordering marriage certificates from a local registrar is
due to the way they are indexed. Unlike births and deaths, which can easily
be found via an approximate date (i.e. the quarter they were registered in),
local offices index marriages by venue (i.e. the church, chapel, synagogue,
registry office etc). So unless you know not just when but where it took
place, most registrars will not be willing to undertake the search. There
are some who are more helpful than others, but they are becoming few and far
between as funding cuts at local government level bite into staff budgets.
