Dear list members,

I am trying to find the 1600-ca1615 Christening date, birthplace
and names of parents, in England, of Nicholas BROWNE - and perhaps
his wife. (And I realize what a needle-in-the-haystack I am
seeking!) Nicholas arrived in Aquidneck, Rhode Island Colony by
1638, and died December, 1694. The names of his children, mostly
born in RI, were William, Nicholas, Abraham, and Jane, but I’m not
sure of birth order.

I am relying on a list of counties in England whose numbers of people
sailing for New England, Massachusetts and Boston (1620-1650) are
shown in Emery Battis’ book, “Saints and Sectaries: Anne Hutchinson
and the Antinomian Controversey in the Massachusetts Bay Colony” (1962)

Nicholas BROWNE was placed by Mr. Battis, not in the core group, but
in the peripheral group. In a phone call, Mr. Battis could not
remember what resource he used caused him to list Nicholas BROWNE.

Several of those earliest emigrants to New England came from
Essex, so I am hoping someone there can suggest how to find BROWN/
BROWNE family historians, who already may have information about
‘my’ Nicholas. Or, are there books there detailing those who left
Essex, by name, or are there BROWNE family histories in libraries ?

I will not be able to stay a member of the Essex Maillist for long,
due to the daily numbers of messages, but I can be reached at
patbrown at albion.edu Thank you for your help. Patricia
