In 1885 my grandmother was baptized Eliza Elizabeth DAVEY, although her family and husband always called her Elsie.

I remember her telling me that throughout her life officious people had told her that she couldn't be called Eliza Elizabeth because that would be using the same name twice. Her invariable response was that you can never have too much of a good thing.

They are, of course, two variants of the same name, as demonstrated in Pride and Prejudice where Jane Austen referes to her heroine as both Miss Elizabeth Bennet and Miss Eliza Bennet.
