Can anyone on the list help me with finding out more about the Army Hospital Corps. I have a possible relative, Henry Edward COOK born in Clapham, Surrey in 1837. In 1862 he married an Esther PIDINGTON/PIDDINGTON?, born Coggeshall, Essex c 1837 and they had three children.

Their first child, Richard Henry COOK was born in Netley, Hampshire in 1863, second son William Edward COOK born Colchester, Essex in 1868 and third son, George Arthur COOK was born in Netley, Hampshire in 1870.

In the 1861 census Henry Edward COOK was single and living in the Colchester Infantry Barracks. His occupation was described as "Private Army Hospital Corps". In 1871 the family were living in Netley Road, Hound Parish, Hampshire.

In the 1881 census Esther COOK is noted as being a widow, although I have not found an appropriate death index entry for Henry Edward COOK. Were military deaths recorded elsewhere?

I would be interested in finding if there was a military record for Henry Edward COOK, and if so how to go about tracking it down. If anyone can point me in the direction to find out more about the Army Hospital Corps I would be mcuh appreciated too. I am very curious to know how a lad from Surrey ended up in the Colchester Infantry Barracks - was recruitment done far and wide?

Any help much appreciated

Beth
