Hi Maree

The College of Arms would be the ideal place to ask.

Archive CD Books also sell CDs of the visitations of the Heralds for various
counties back in the Middle Ages; these visitations started because there
was concern that people were claiming Armorial Bearings and weren't entitled to
them.

Having read other responses, it should be emphasised that *families* were
not allowed to 'bear Arms' as they were designed only for individuals. If a son
was also entitled to have their own Arms then (in general) they had a
slightly modified version of their father's Arms according to a fixed formula.
