You might find this link interesting
http://www.southend.gov.uk/content.asp?content=1552
It contains a picture of the mill at Milton. It also states that "Hamlet
Mill, a post mill, stood in Milton to the south of the present Methodist
Church, on the corner of Avenue Road and Park Road. It can be traced back to
1299 when a "new mill" was built for £15 5s. 10d. It was here that John,
Earl of Holland, half brother to Richard II, was captured by the villagers
of Milton whilst trying to escape after an unsuccessful plot against Henry
IV. The mill was demolished after the estate was sold in 1869. Avenue Road,
once called Mill Lane, is one of the oldest roads in the Borough, linking
Milton to Prittlewell."
In the 1841 census Elizabeth GOING, 25, and Catherine GOING, 60,both
described as 'Independent" living with a female servant in West Street,
Prittlewell. The preceding entry is for James Watson, a miller. And in
1861 Elizabeth is a servant in Kingston, Surrey, described as married - but
like you I can't spot Richard.
You say ". . . I'm still bemused as to how a 22-year-old from Buxhall (near
Stowmarket) in Suffolk ended up being a farmer there in 1839." Why are you
sure that someone enumerated as "R. Fuller, 24, Farmer, N" together with "S.
Fuller, 21,,No" is your Richard?

Hello,

Thanks for the information. Here are the details of which I'm certain:

Richard OSBORNE FULLER is recorded on the 1841 Census as "R. Fuller", and
his wife Sarah Jane as "S. Fuller".

Unfortunately, neither site allows for initials when you search (unless you
specify just the initial). The Origins indexing (now mirrored on the
1837Online site) is once again perfect; Ancestry has managed to read the
surname as "Tuller". (In case you're wondering how I found the entries, I
specified just the surname on the Origins site - with a marriage certificate
for July 1839 and a death certificate for November 1841, the couple should
be there.)

Richard's known marital history is:
(1) 1839-1841: Married to Sarah Jane WINKUP. (Believe it or not, but this
made Richard his own step-uncle-in-law. How? One of Richard's elder sisters
was the second wife of the father of Sarah Jane.)
(2) 1842: Relationship with Mary Ann CHAPMAN of East Tilbury which led to
the birth of Emily FULLER CHAPMAN in 1843 who was baptised on 17/04/1843 at
East Tilbury. (Emily's eldest child, Robert Osborne MACKLEY, was baptised on
15/02/1863 at Gravesend St. George, Kent.)
(3) On 03/07/1849, Richard married Elizabeth GOING of Southend (now
Southend-on-Sea) at Kennington in Surrey. Elizabeth was probably born at
Southchurch c.1815.

In 1851, Richard and Elizabeth were living at Hamlet Mill, Mill Lane,
Prittlewell. Richard's occupation is recorded as "miller". (The census
reference is HO107/1777/265/59 and Ancestry has mis-indexed the family.)

I've found no trace of Richard after the 1851 census.

As far as I can tell (I have very little knowledge of Essex), Walton's Hall
in Mucking is to the south-west of the village. The village of Linford
appears to be a recent creation, so Linford falls within the area that would
have been call Mucking in 1841. So it looks like the "Walton's Hall" I'm
interested in is now Walton Hall Museum. (Before I sent my e-mail, I worked
through the 1841/51/61 census returns to try to find Walton's Hall on the
maps I have/can access. Muckingford is the original name for Linford.)
So the "Linford" part of the address for the museum (and its location on
Multimap) match accurately. The "Stanford-Le-Hope" line seems a little odd,
but maybe it's counted as an important town by the Post Office.

Unfortunately the Museum web-site doesn't have any information about the
history of the farm, so I'm still bemused as to how a 22-year-old from
Buxhall (near Stowmarket) in Suffolk ended up being a farmer there in 1839.

Thanks,
Charles Fuller.

Charles

Searching both Ancestry and Origins 1841 census indexes for Charles Fuller
doesn't seem to take me to a census page for either Charles or Sarah at the
home you specify - perhaps you could post the full reference?
A couple of listers have given info about "Walton's Hall" - but I think this
is a different establishment. There is a Mucking that is not far at all
from Prittlewell - whereas the one both Ross and Steve refer to is quite a
long way off.
When I ran a search for "Charles Osborne Fuller" on Ancestry it pointed to a
FreeBMD entry (Q3/1849 Lambeth) which had eight people listed - one of whom
was Mary Elizabeth Fuller (unlikely to be a coincidence) and another was
Elizabeth Going. Both Osborne and Going are well-known Southend families,
and the fishing trade meant connections with London.

Happy to help further.

Hello,

Richard OSBORNE FULLER and his wife Sarah Jane (née WINKUP) are recorded on
the 1841 census as living at "Walton's Hall", Mucking. The property also
appears on the 1861 census, near to "Sutton's Farm" and the "Blue House".
On the Old Maps web-site (dated 1873), Walton's Hall is opposite Flamburgh
Hall and not far from Mucking Ford.

Does anyone have any information about the property? I'm curious as to how
Richard OSBORNE FULLER came to be living there for at least 1839 to 1841.
(In 1851, he is recorded as a miller in Prittlewell.) All I've managed to
find from Google is that the property is Grade II listed.

Thanks,
Charles Fuller, Vevey, Switzerland.
