Another development feeding frenzy in Chelmsford and more heritage lost.
B&W, one of Springfield/Chelmsford's largest and oldest independent
retailers with a trading history stretching back 160 years in Springfield
closed yesterday - thanks to an aggressive offer by property developers
which means the value of the land the premises stands on outstrips the value
of the business.

It was still part owned and managed by the two families, Director John
Bolingbroke and Simon Watkins, a nephew of Richard Wenley.

This and the loss of what was left of Marconi , plus the closure of the
Singer franchise which had had a shop in Chelmsford since 1885, the
destruction of Duke Street & its old bus depot and the horrible development
plans for lovely old Moulsham Street, how much of Chelmsford's heritage will
survive the developers' and politicians boundless greed?
