Hello,

You probably already have the 1881 Census information for Ada's family, with
her father William working as a plate-layer on the railway. If not, let me
know, and I will forward the information to you. Here Ada's mother is
called Susan.

The FreeBMD site lists the birth of a William SUTTON in the Romford
registration district (which included Upminster), registered in the June
quarter of 1839. The other information needed for ordering the certificate
is: Volume 12, Page 207

The same site does list 2 birth registrations in 1840 for a Susan REYNOLDS
(not Susannah), both registered in the March quarter. One was in the
Chelmsford Registration District, volume 12, page 44. The other was in the
Dunmow district, volume 12, page 68.

Regarding Daniel's place of birth, I think it's probably "Gt. Oakley" (short
for Great Oakley, in Essex) rather than St. Oakley. It's probably a
transcription error on the 1881 Census transcription. Great Oakley is about
4 miles south west of Harwich, so it's about 50 miles from Upminster. Are
you certain that this is the correct "Daniel SMITH"?

Regards,

David Lamb
