As I said last time you put a query about this on Essex list, Jason, you're
having trouble finding John Carter because you're misreading his birthplace.
He wasn't born in Tolleshunt Dirtrey, there is no such place - nor
Tolleshunt Ditrey either. Without a shadow of a doubt John Carter was was
born in Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Essex. Carter is an old name of the Tolleshunt
villages and district.
I've been researching the Tolleshunt for some years and, though they have
been known by many name variants over the centuries, Ditrey or Dirtey have
never been one of them.
Have looked on the 1901 census too and have no doubt that what you're
reading as Tolleshunt Dirtrey is definitely Tolleshunt D'Arcy. The 'A' of
D'Arcy is badly written so it looks a bit , like a 't', but its definitely
not a 't', its an 'A'. What you're reading as an 'r' is really 'rc'.
