Hi Grant,
Sounds an interesting idea.
What are the lab costs likely to be?

Subject: [Ess] Essex DNA Study?

Hi,

I would like to gauge the interest in a proposed 'Essex DNA Project', for
those interested in family research. There are some clear benefits in these
studies and academic Population Genetics now support this approach to
genealogy. There is already an 'East Anglia DNA Project', and I though there
is no reason why we should not have our very own. I think a few of us have
seen the success of the BBC 'Blood of the Viking' study.

The new field is coined 'Anthrogenealogy'.

These are some of the benefits of testing, which simply remove brickwalls in
our research..

1. Where those of the same name are thought to be related but no records are
found, testing will establish if a common ancestor is shared by these family
lines.

2. Where those of a regional area are actually related, but their respective
ancestors assumed different surnames at the time of registration, eg 'Poll
Tax', etc.

3. Testing will provide evidence to link families back to original villages.

4. Of interest to many family historians is the ability to estimate the
ancient origins of a family through testing and discovering if Ancient
Briton, Celt, Roman, Anglo-Saxon or Viking/Norman.

Given the history of Essex, testing would be a great way to establish
connections to the historical migrations to the area. This adds a new vista
of family research for genealogists.

If there is general interest I will move forward and establish the project.
The project would be not-for-profit and run by volunteers. The only cost
involved would naturally be the lab costs.

All the best!
Grant South.
