Hi Bron.

There is a national website which you can use to plan journeys between
any two train stations; it also allows you to book tickets in advance,
and you can download complete timetables for all the routes as well.

Start here:

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/download_tt.htm

This page lists all the country's rail networks by operating company;
each section has a link which will take you to timetable downloads. On
the right of the page is a route-planning search engine; this is a bit
fussy in the way it works. You have (of course) to enter two places in
the box, but the next page implies that you entered no places and
demands that you enter them. Just enter them again and the following
pages all work and respond logically. You might think that you could get
away with not entering any destinations in the search box as you'll
merely get the repeated demand again, but this doesn't work; although it
ignores the first places you enter, if you don't enter them you can't
get any further!

I tried planning a journey from Billericay to Benfleet to see how well
the two are linked by rail; the results require two changes en route,
both in Southend. The first leg, Billericay to Southend Victoria, is run
by One Railway (http://www.onerailway.com/), and the third leg is
operated by C2C Railways (www.c2c-online.co.uk). The middle leg is
operated by "foot" but I can't find their website (hee hee!). For that
matter, finding the middle leg was a bit difficult as well, unlike the
left and right ones.

Although the journey uses two rail companies, you would only need one
ticket which you could buy in advance on the website or in person at any
of the stations, on the day or in advance.

Hope this helps.

Lawrence.
