Hello listers,
I'm trying to find out the origins of the above named. I have been researching the SEARLE family in Bishop' Stortford, and Thomas was living there with his wife Hannah GILBEY when his children were born. Other descendants, now in Australia, have been researching this family for a long time, and none of us can find out where Thomas originated. There are various entries on the IGI , with birth dates varying from 1746 to 1751, and birthplaces from Bishops Stortford to Stansted Mountfitchet. They all agree on one thing, however, his marriage in 1776 to Hannah, whose birthplace is given as Stansted Mountfitchet. We believe her parents to be John GILBEY and Ann WARWICK. Parish records for the Bishop's Stortford area have yielded nothing on his birth, but his children's baptisms are all recorded at St. Michael's, Bishop's Stortford.
We think that possibly Thomas was born just over the border on the Essex side, not Hertfordshire, so are widening our search.
If anyone could help I'd love to hear from them.
Barbara
