Thanks to your help, I have just received this email back from the Essex folks at Chelmsford. I think it might be useful for any of us wishing to locate a possible divorce. Here is what they said:
"Thank you for your email. Until 1858 divorces, which were very rare, were only obtained under an Act of Parliament. The records are held by the Parliamentary Archives at the House of Lords Record Office (email: website www.parliament.uk ).
