Thank you Philip for the wonderful Kursaal website.
I was brought up in Southend & actually lived in the High Street where I
used to sit on our balcony & watch the Londoners arriving by train to spend
the day at the seaside. Then returning in the evening wearing their
'Kiss-me-Quick' paper hats & carrying sticks of peppermint rocks.
The Kursaal was one of our favourite places as was the Peter Pan's
playground with lots of rides & The Crooked House, etc.
I was never game enough to ride on the scenic railway but my Mother always
boasted that she went on it 8 times straight off when she was a child.
