Many thanks Colleen and DaveD for your replies. I've been in contact many
times with Jack Baxter for marriages and will have to see if he or the ESFH
has any burials for North Weald.

As you say Colleen, there may be no connection, BROWN is such a common
name - but I have a William who disappeared from my own family, and other
reasons to think there may be a connection.

The mention of Glovers Farm, Hastingwood being held by DANIEL Brown (not
shouting, emphasising the Daniel) and his son William in 1886 is
interesting. There is a Daniel in my own extended family with several
children including a son William. Daniel was born in Netteswell but in 1851
was at Wood Side, North Weald. He died in 1884 at Rye Hill, Epping. The
son William was born in 1846 at North Weald or Epping, depending on which
census you look at. In 1851 he was at Wood Side, North Weald and in 1861
and 1871 was at Epping. I haven't tracked him down after that.

However, there is this 1881 census entry of interest to me - at Potter St
Harlow, William BROWN, aged 38 born North Weald Bassett, a Shepherd, with
wife Elizabeth and children William 7, Ernest 6, Charles 4. In 1891 this
family is at Hastingwood Road, Hastingwood, North Weald Bassett with an
additional daughter Rose, 8. This time William is shown as aged 50, born
Rye Hill, Essex. Until now I thought this William was probably the son of
another BROWN couple, Jesper and Mary, who was born in North Weald 1840-42 -
but, with your mention of Daniel, perhaps I need to take a closer look at
this family.

The trials and tribulations of researching a name like BROWN! But I'm
thankful for what is so readily available to help long-distance researchers
like myself these days. And if anyone is researching BROWN in this area do
please contact me as I have quite a bit of information on my database and
might be able to help you.

Helen, NSW, Australia
