Here's a Waltham Cross related query for you, Lawrence, from my History of
Harlow by Linley Bateman - and another Churchgate Street school to add to
the pot of confusion.
In 1810, George Fawbert of Waltham Cross, who's executor was John Barnard,
the Harlowbury farmer, established the British School which was rebuilt in
1836 and then changed its name to Fawbert & Barnards- which is still here in
Old Harlow. Why would John Barnard have been the executor of Geo Fawbert and
why did Fawbert, a Waltham Cross man, build a British School in Harlow - and
why did the school's name use their joint surnames? Puzzling.
Anyway, the vicar of Harlow, a Mr Miller, got the hump about Fawbert and
Barnards' management and founded a National School, one based on the
religious principles of the Church Of England. this was established in 1816
at Churchgate Street - adjacent to St Mary & St Hugh's Church.
A new building, the gift of Perry Waltlington, replaced the old school in
1850. Was the old school the annex like building which is now used as our
parish office, I wonder, fascinating old flint and brick building it is, of
very pretty construction. It has something of the look of an old school
about it too.
