Like Pat, I'm interested in French records and how to find them. My
great grandmother, Anne Maria SMITH, is shown on all censuses as a
British subject born in Paris, France, c1847. I've been unable to find
her birth through LDS, or marriage or other details of her father,
Henry, with any certainty, except that he's shown on Anne Maria's
marriage certificate (to Thomas ADAMS in Hillesden, Bucks.) as a Farm
Bailiff. Family rumour has it that he worked as a gardener for the
Rothschild family at some time, so possibly in France. There's a
Rothschild site, but the person there was unable to supply any
information about 19th century employees, British or otherwise.

This is a mainly Bucks. family, with some Northants. and Oxon.
connections -- please excuse the posting to this list in search of
general suggestions. I would dearly love to find Anne Maria's birth
certificate!

Subject: FOGG

Good afternoon all,

I am looking for some advice or suggestions.

I have a William FOGG (baptised 11/1/1835 in Norton Mandeville). He
married, so I am told on the 14th January either 1858 or 1860 at H B M
Embassy, Paris, France. (think I was told 1860 but birth of first child
suggest 1858 ?????)

His first four children were born between 1858 - 1868
France. The last four in Essex (Mountnessing, Hutton and
East Tilbury).

Now I have his occupation as a Groom and Gardener domestic. This is from
census 1881 and 1891 and the 1901 census has him as a domestic gardener.

1) Would it be fair to suggest that he was working for the Foreign
Affairs Department/ Embassy as a gardener/ groom while in France??

2) Or may be I should as what H B M stands for??

3) Is there any way of getting records about his employment
in this time??

Thank you
Pat
