Perhaps my own experience might prove useful. Having nurtured a
one-name study for some forty years or so, I have now nearly 250 families
(male line producing children). It quickly became evident that to encompass
them within a single chart would be impossible and thus perforce it became
necessary to restrict the chart size to A4. So, each family has now it's own
chart with a discrete number. Charts are linked to each other when known by
such numbers against individuals - both up and down. A comprehensive
database, allied to personal identity numbers (necessary to differentiate
between many of the same forename who otherwise could be (and often are:))
confused.

I appreciate that this solution does not fit all circumstances but
the five ring-binder volumes of my families does allow me to:

1. Find an individual quickly.
2. Follow the lineage, both forwards and backwards, very quickly.
3. Enable a hard print-out of a particular line as a series of
charts to order.
4. Allow insertion of ancillary data, e.g., census returns, wills,
photos, memorial cards etc. etc. as annexes to individual charts.

Naturally, not all the data is complete - far from it, but the
database allows correlation to discover the possible 'candidates' for
missing links.

Mike.
