Dear List,
I have included my original email for reference but it has now been confirmed having received the most delighful set of papers from the USA for Joseph Cobb which states he was born in Colchester and he and his wife sailed from Liverpool on the 29th September 1872 and arrived in the States on 12th October.
Joseph was born in 1844 to James Cobb and Mary Ann. James was born about 1799 Copford and superindent of St Botolphs Cemetery.
It would be great if anyone has a connection. Thanks.
Kind regards,
Linda
PS Tip - If anyone would like to follow up possible USA immigrants the State Librarian staff are very helpfull.

Subject: New Lister - Surname COBB
Hello List,
This is my first posting and am wondering if anyone can help, its going to be a bit long winded so thanks for taking the time to read this message and hopefully someone may have a connection.
On my Kent family side Annie FLECTHER married a Joseph COBB in 1872 SOUTHBOROUGH Kent. Joseph was a widower and his father's name was James.
On the 1871 census there is no Kent born Joseph COBB but there is a COLCHESTER born (about 1844) Joseph living in RAMSGATE and he is also widower. One and the same maybe. Joseph's occupation is a reporter and due to his occupation I then found English born Joseph and Annie Cobb with ages correct on the US 1880 census and Joseph is a newspaper editor.
The possible candidate for Joseph's first marriage which I found on FreeBMD took place in COLCHESTER district in 1866 to Catherine PARMENTER however only a few months later is a death of Catherine COBB aged 24. And also on the 1871 is a James COBB aged 72 born COPFORD living in St BOTOLPHS with his COLCHESTER born wife and two daughters. Could this be Joseph's father perhaps.
I enquired to the Indiana State Library regarding Joseph Cobb and although I must admit that I do not really know for sure (yet) whether they are same person the library has given me some very useful information and the various newspapers that Joseph worked at up to 1920. They also advised that Joseph emigrated to the US in 1872 which would be shortly after his marriage in to my Kent family. I also know that his naturalization papers can be supplied.
Yes, things do fit in rather neatly and I hope some Essex listers can advise more.
Please also see below my main surname interests and please feel free to contact me if any of them connect.
Kind regards,
