Hi Cassie.

Apologies for the late reply but I've been in Germany for a few days. Back
now.

Firstly you need to be certain of the placename. There is a Waltham Cross,
but it is in Hertfordshire, right next to the county border with Essex.
Inside the Essex border at this same point is the town of Waltham Abbey.
Just to confuse things, the town of Waltham Abbey (along with a few hamlets)
lies within the ecclesiastical parish of Waltham Holy Cross, and could
easily be referred to in old docs as either Waltham Abbey or Waltham Holy
Cross. The latter name could get shortened to Waltham Cross, but not by
anyone with local enough knowledge to know of the town of that name in
Herts, only about 1.5 miles from Waltham Abbey.

But since Waltham Cross, Herts was part of the parish of Cheshunt, Herts
until the mid 19th Century (when it was annexed into its own parish and the
parish of Waltham Cross, Herts was first established) then I think it likely
that your 18th Century reference must be to Waltham Holy Cross in Essex.

Secondly, there are indeed burial registers covering the period in question,
and Allsup is a local name too, but there is no easy-to-access index to this
period. Modern indexes so far only cover burials from 1813 to 1878. This
town's Victorian local historian (and Baptist minister) William Winters
(1835-93) did index all the parish registers from their earliest records up
to c.1800-1812, but this index only exists as a very difficult-to-read
manuscript held at Essex Record Office. It is essentially a rough first (and
only) draft, arranged by first letter only for blocks of years at a time,
with many extra 'newly-discovered' surnames being squeezed into tiny corners
of already-full pages of names beginning with the same letter. It has
however been microfiched along with the ERO fiche of the parish registers
themselves (ERO ref: D/P 75/1/* as Glynis says), so you should be able to
purchase a copy of the set and, with a lot of effort, compare the index with
the original entries. Waltham Abbey Hist Soc will be tidying up and
extending this index, to as near to 1900 as possible, for publication, but
this will not be completed in the foreseeable future.

In 1885 Wm Winters published 'Our Parish Registers, being 300 years of
curious local history... of the parish of Waltham Holy Cross' but this is a
selected gathering of interesting register entries, monumental inscriptions,
and other bits and pieces he'd collected on local people, not by any means
an exhaustive listing; it does mention a few Allsups of the mid 19th Century
but none any earlier. I can send you these entries if you wish, for what
they're worth.
