Hi Kev
I second your praise of Ancestry, and worth every penny. I thoroughly
recommend it to anyone and you will find its far more exciting doing your
own research on the censuses because its amazing how many more connections
you find to your family when you go through street by street. I've found
whole families, not only in the area where I knew they would be, but also in
neighbouring villages where a daughter has married into another family, or a
son set up a new home.

Hi all,
I have an account with Ancestry, it costs about £60 a year, ($100
?). I reckon it is the best monetary value that I can get, for the
returns that I also get. I do not use it every day, but I do use it when
ever I need to have an indexed version of large parts of the 1871, 1891
and 1901 census.
So, I actually do not feel that it is a rip-off company, in fact
I am quite proud to support a company that offers all this help at a
significant, but reasonable cost.
I get a lot of criticism, occasionally, when asking for donations
(charitable only), for doing research for people. I use all the paid
resources that I have, which include various census, Ancestry resources,
and good old leg work to the various Record Offices.
I would be interested in where the fine line needs to be drawn
between doing everything 'for nothing', and being able to charge for
significant amounts of work / effort.
I am not belittling the efforts of those who offer lots of help
for free, I do it all the time; but wonder whether the 80/20 rule comes
into operation, where 80% of the free requests come from 20% of the
people?
Meanwhile, remember, I am the only person who actually indexes
fairly large parts of the Essex (& Suffolk) 1841 census. Oh, if only
Ancestry would do this for me. This is all available at
http://essex1841.com , http://rootsgen.com and http://kevw.net - they
all carry fairly similar material, and have been updated significantly
today.
Enjoy & Discuss.
Best,
Kevan
