I don't know their names, but have a clue
<skip>
that his mother's name was probably Priscilla. as there is only one
Priscilla in all Boyds index married to a Hawkins, I'm very curious to know
more about it. problem is, all it says is vicar general. this doesn't help
me know where the marriage took place. who was the vicar general and did he
have jurisdiction over a section of England or all of it?
<skip>
how do I find out if the marriage was in Essex?

Hello Cornelia,
The Vicar-General was the deputy of either an Archbishop or
Bishop, normally assigned the duties of the administration of the province
or diocese. Regarding marriages, the sale of marriage licences provided a
regular source of income.
In 1890, The Harleian Society of London published a transcript of
such applications for licences (volume XXX). The full title reads
'Allegations for Marriage Licences issued by the Vicar-General of the
Archbishop of Canterbury July 1679 to June 1687', edited by George J.
Armytage F.S.A., Hon. Sec. of the Harleian Society.
On page 289 was found:
'1687 May 12 James HAWKINS of the Middle Temple, London, bach., abt 23, &
Mrs Priscilla HILL of Shrewsbury, co. Salop, Spr., above 21, at own disp.,
at the Chapel of Lincoln's Inn, or at the Temple, London.'
Although the use of 'Mrs' implies a married name, the description of
'Spr' as spinster is likely to be correct. 'Co. Salop' is an earlier name
for the county of Shropshire. Whether the marriage actually took place and
where can only be determined by further research.
Mike.
