To get away from memory lane for a moment, I recently bought some cheese at
my local Co-op. The lady in front of me asked for a pound of some type of
cheese, and I watched with interest as the young assistant put exactly
enough cheese on the metric scales to make 454g (within reason) without a
moment's thought. Then it was my turn. As all the prices were metric too, I
stupidly asked for half a kilo of cheddar. Amazingly, the young assistant
was completely stumped! She looked at the cheese (priced in kilos), then
studied the scales (graduated in kilos), then went to cut off a lump of
cheese, but hesitated and went 'backstage', emerging a moment later with a
more senior assistant who showed her what to do.

Fascinating!

Lawrence
