The certificates I have bought over the years, both right and wrong (I have
a few of those!)have cost me an arm and a leg. The rest, researchers, fares
to archives etc. have cost me the other arm and leg. No wonder I don't get
out much!

Speaking to a friend who's spent a small fortune on Essex research had me
thinking about how much I've spent over the years. I had to stop totalling,
it was too depressing, but it certainly runs into thousands of pounds one
way and another - though my collection of certificates and other records,
maps, books and old and current photographs accounts for a lot of this.

Thank goodness I don't live abroad, so at least I rarely have to use private
researchers or spend thousands on overseas travel. I sympathise with
overseas listers who have to travel here for research purposes or pay for
researchers, you must have spent quite a bit more than I have over the
years. I know one overseas researcher who's had two research trips here and
is planning another one in the future.

I count my blessings that I'm fortunate enough to live in Essex and within
easy travelling distance of the villages I'm researching, I'd be one very
poor person if I had to travel to Essex from abroad to do my research.

Anyone else thought about how much they've spent on this expensive obsession
of ours?

Colleen
