Hi Chris,
Firstly, I would make sure that the information I had for my version of the
tree was absolutely fool-proof, and guaranteed three hundred per cent
correct.
Then I would drop a hint that 'something doesn't seem to tie in', and ask
the original branch where they got some of their information from. ('I've
got Charlie living in Colchester in 1881, but you say Chelmsford. I've
double-checked for other Charlies, but can't find one that matches......')
I don't know how far back they got with the tree, but anyone who got back
even to 1900 deserves a medal. If anyone thinks it's difficult tracing their
ancestors today, then you should have tried doing genealogy back in the
1960's. I think that you *had* to go to St Catherine's House in London which
was the only place which held the GRO Index, and that the PRO at Kew was the
only place that had the census - plus of course, the 1871, 1881, and 1891
census were still top secret under the 100 year rule.
Hopefully, the original researchers will accept your praise for what they
achieved under much more difficult conditions than we have today, and
acknowledge that your version is correct. (I would also keep the original
tree, and explain on it exactly where and why the mistake was made. )
