Subject: McCANN/COLLIN Marriage in Great Wakering, 24 Aug.1857

Hello, List,
I am new to this list (though not to family history) and I'd like to post my Essex interests in hopes of a connection.

I've just found a marriage of my James McCANN to my Eleanor COLLIN on 24 Aug. 1857 in Great Wakering.

Eleanor's father is listed as James COLLIN, a carter, and she is born in Great Wakering as well, I believe on 29 August 1839. James' father is listed as Patrick McCANN, a weaver, and he and his father both are born in Ireland. Patrick's occupation is listed as Soldier. I believe James to have been born on 24 June 1826.

I wonder if there are other COLLIN researchers on the List. I am quite sure of the absent "s" but has anyone else found COLLIN and COLLINS to be interchangeable as you go back? Any other McCANN researchers for Essex as well? I know it is Irish but it's hard to do research in Ireland without knowing the county of birth and so far I don't have that (though the name is prevalent in Armagh from what I see in Primary Valuation.) I wonder how many McCanns came over to Great Wakering or if this is a relatively isolated incident due to his being a soldier? (I wonder what kind of soldier?) James McCann is also of the right age to maybe be escaping to England because of the Famine in the forties. But all of this is speculation on my part, so I wonder if other Essex researchers have a connection and might know, or have a similar situation in their families.

Thanks for listening and for sharing this List.

Best Wishes,
Elysia in Northern Virginia, USA
