Hi Roy,

The 'where born' details on the 1841 census are restricted to whether born
in the county, there is no space for actual birthplace, so the only
information you are likely to receive is for any Staines/Stains living in
Felstead.

With subsequent census there are two very important factors to take into
consideration when requesting look-ups. The first is that only some areas
have been indexed, and without indexing you have to look at every single
entry for that city/town/village. Secondly, if someone is still living in
the place they were born then it's easy to find them. Without a surname
index, if they've left the place of their birth you have as much chance of
finding them in Timbuktu as in Tiptree.

Indexes are available from the Essex Family History Society for a very
modest cost compared to the number of hours you could spend searching for a
name. The indexes tell you the exact page on which to look.
