This is still a village, the church is in a rather poor state, there are a
few shops and a delightful old railway station. Most of the people would have
worked on the land, it is still quite rural, although in the last couple of
years more housing has been built. Asheldam is very small and also nearby is the
pretty village of Tillingham, set around a village green, with the local
village inn, and the lovely old church of St Nicholas.
These villages are in the Dengie Hundred, I think, and lie just a few miles
from the River Blackwater.
