I have just received the marriage of my Sarah Ann BRUCE to William COOKE in 1860. It took place in Colchester Registry Office which was a surprise as all the other weddings in the family were in church and they were regular church goers.

Were registry office weddings common? or was it a sign the marriage didn't meet with family approval?

I would be grateful for any thoughts
