Fascinating indeed......
lol mate, i have been to the 1901 census, and Henry is there, and you are right, hes the one from Ilford, i know thats him, becuase his occupation is BOOTMAKER, and this is a fmaily trade of my SHOLL side, my grt grandfather was a bootmaker, so was his father, whos alfred on the 1881 census, and so was his father, whos James Sholl the father and head of household in 1881.
Alfred certainly existed, hes my grt grt grandfather, and i have his marriage certificate, he married in Alice Smith in 1888, and it says on the cert, his father is James Sholl!

all we are taking about them ! : )

However I have just had a little look at the 1901 census (
http://www.census.pro.gov.uk/ and the following was there....

Name Age Where Born Administrative County Civil
Parish Occupation
Henry Sholl 28 London Marylebone London S Marylebone
HouseDecorator
Henry Sholl 33 Essex Ilford Surrey Epsom
Bootmaker
Henry Sholl 35 London London Kensington
Postman

I didn't go any further with the search, because I would have to pay to
see the full census record, but I would take a small bet that one of
those is you man and he's married and therefore might well have a
marriage certificate. Quite possibly also the name of his wife to help
you further pin it down.

Personally I think it's the lad from Essex Ilford, as his parents in
1881 knew he was born in Walthamstow, but his memories are of growing up
in Ilford Essex, and so believes that's where he was born.

Or it's all just my wild conjecture!

Anyway it's a fascinating little study.
