There will always be confusion, but the Essex Society for Family History have recently done their best to help by producing a gazetteer that covers even the most obscure places.
Examples include: Hope End Green (Takeley), Craig's End (Stambourne), Pig's Parlour (Newport), and many more. I particularly like Ardleigh Heath (Ardleigh), because I used to live there) and Ardleigh Green (Romford), where I have never been!
Steeple Bumpstaed (know also as Bumpstead-at-Turrim) and Helions Bumpstead are there too.
I do not know whether this excellent guide is available to non-members. We should all support their invaluable work anyway.

Good hunting in the Essex byways.

John
