Surely the best advice is to search the GRO Birth Index for references
to the name SHOLL, which I would have termed "uncommon" and therefore
relatively easy to find and list, and then to apply for certificates to
the GRO quoting, absolutely exactly, the reference numbers etc. given in
the Index? Spelling variations, such as SCHOLL, need to be considered.

I seem to have seen this advice given to you on previous occasions.

Birthplaces given in censuses are frequently unreliable, so you really
are taking a chance by applying to local Register Offices. And, by all
accounts, you're not making much progress.

Progress is really much more likely if you take the trouble to assemble
as much information as you can beforehand.

Just to give you an example. I recently assisted a Lister whose ancestor
was born on "Horsey Island". For various reasons, quite justifiable
ones, it was assumed that this was Horsey Island in Essex. Application
for a certificate of a birth (in Essex) to the GRO proved fruitless. In
fact the birth was on Horsea Island near Portsmouth, a tiny speck of a
place, and the birth was registered, and in the Index, in the
registration district of Fareham, Hampshire. Once the application was
made with the right reference number etc., a certificate was provided by
the GRO immediately. Problem solved.

Regards,
Noel

Subject: Alfred Sholl and James SHOLL... Help needed

dear list,

my current situation is ive written to Waltham Forest office to buy a
copy of Jame Sholl's birth certificate. he was born in circa 1889 / 1900
ad was born in Manor Park, he is my great grandfather, i found a site
which said if he was born in manor park, then his record of birth will
be at Waltham Forest offices, so ive written there.

however, this was soemtime ago, its nearing three weeks ago i wrote, and
the cheque has not been cashed, im wodnering do they normally take this
long? im in england to, so its not like it has to go airmail.

reason i want his birth cert, is i want to know his father, i believe
his father is Alfred Sholl, born cira 1866 in essex, Alfred is on the
1881 cencus, but when i wrote off for his birth cert, i got my cheque
sent back, syaing that they couldnt find him. i have therfor came to the
conclusion, i either gave the wrong year of birth , or , place of birth,
i know i didnt give the wrong year of birth, so it must be the place of
birth, in 1881 hes listed as ilford, essex, so i would really apreciate
soembody doing a lookup on another cencus for alfred sholl, born in
1866, essex, if i could find out if that place of birth is infact wrong,
i can write somehwere else.

any help or suggstions or anything welcomed,

thanks in advance

Dan
