Subject: Beware when exchanging info!
Date: Wed, 18 Dec 2002 16:21:59 -0000
Hello all,
On a general topic, I feel I should warn everyone to be careful when exchanging genealogical info with others.
Somewhat naively some months ago I exchanged GEDCOMs with a lady who contacted me about some common ancestors. I naturally presumed that we would use this information for our own private research.
Imagine my delight today when using a search engine for a surname I'm researching that it turned up a website which appeared to contain the names of exactly those people I was looking for. When I clicked on the site however my delight turned to dismay when I found that the site contained all my GEDCOM info on a large part of my family history including information on myself and my closest living relatives! I then saw that the site was owned by the person I'd exchanged the GEDCOM with month's earlier!
At no time had she indicated that she had this site or ask my permission to use my info on it, nor is there any acknowledgment on there to me for my research.
In future I shall be very careful when exchanging information and ask that people request my permission if they intend to publish that info on a website. I shall certainly not pass on any information on living relations.
Some of you may consider I'm over reacting but I am truly very annoyed!
Kind regards and best wishes to all for the Season
Clive Holden (Kent GB)
