Hello,

I can't work out many of Ruth's problem place names (indeed, they may not be
problems to her - just examples), but anyway, here are some suggestions:

"Cenderford Gloshire - somewhere in Gloucestershire I assume" - Cinderford,
Gloucestershire
"Essex Aibridge - where?" - Abridge 1½ miles east of Loughton
"Bristol Gloster - Wiltshire, surely?" - No; as far as I know Bristol was in
Somerset before Avon was created. The border with Wiltshire at its nearest
was about 13 miles away.
"Beds Caton Loncon - somewhere in Bedfordshire I assume" - possibly
abbreviation (mistranscribed), for Caddington, near Luton, Bedfordshire
"Herts Little Adam, Herts Great Adam, Herts All Saints Nk- where?" -
Possibly Adam should be "Hadam". There is a Little Hadam in Hertfordshire,
a mile or two east north east of Bishop's Stortford. There is also Much
Hadam, Hadam Ford and Hadam Cross, but I couldn't find a Great Hadam;
perhaps it's another name for Much Hadam. As for "Herts All Saints Nk",
could it refer to someone whose birthplace was known to have been in a
parish of All Saints somewhere in Hertfordshire, but the name of the town or
village was not known (nk)?

Regards,
David Lamb (Paignton, Devon, UK)
