That's my feeling on this one - although it's not unknown for bells to be hung in a steeple it is considerably more likely that they were hung in the tower.
What we really need is someone in HB to hang their head out of the window on Sunday morning and listen. If there's still a ringable peal there then whoever maintains the bells is more than likely to know if a sixth was ever hung in a steeple.

(Actually, I've just had a thought. A while ago I found a site that listed churches with bells, ringable or otherwise. Try entering Helions Bumpstead and bells into Google and see where you get. It may only tell you the number and the weight of the tenor, though. And yes, I ring..)
