Often, but not always. (I just had this argument on the London mail
list last week!) As I look through the addresses of the people I
correspond with regularly, I see the following:

2 @cs.com (1in the US, 1in the UK)

5 @aol.com (2 in the UK, 2 in the US, 1 in Canada)

1 @verizon.net (US)

2 @hotmail.com (1 US, 1 Canada)

1 @islandnet.com (Canada)

1 @baylogic.com (US)

and my own @island.net (Canada)

Only the 'bt' addresses of a two UK correspondents are immediately
recognizable.

The days of immediate identification are long gone, I'm afraid.
