Hello,
The postcard is quite correct in its allegation. Charles Haddon SPURGEON
was born at Kelvedon on 19 June 1834, though the family later moved to the
Hythe area of Colchester, where his father was a clerk to Thomas MOY, as
well as being pastor of an independent chapel at Tollesbury.. However,
Charles did spend some of his early childhood living with his grandfather at
Stambourne, a village about 4 miles north west of Sible Hedingham. But as
Ian is "Pubby" Hunter, he may well mean that the postcard indicates The
Wheatsheaf itself as Spurgeon's birthplace, and again this may well be so.
In the book "Spurgeon - the People's Preacher" (published in 1892 shortly
after his death) there is a photo with the caption: "House at Kelvedon in
Which Mr. Spurgeon was Born (From Photo by Howard Benham)". The picture
shows a building with an inn-sign, but it isn't clear enough to read. It
does not seem to have been an inn when the Spurgeon family lived there, as
further on in the book is a sketch showing "Mr. Spurgeon's Birthplace as it
Appeared in 1834" and it shows an ordinary house, with no inn-sign.
