Hello Jenny Watson,

pleased to make your acquaintance, commiserations about the soggy weather, as you can imagine it's absolutley belting down here, (no change there)!
My late father, lived in Sydney for the last 16 years, and I remember well how much he enjoyed his Melbourne Cup days, even managing to get down to one or two in his time.
Now, your info about the WO records, thanks for letting me know you actually managed to access them, I was beginning to think lister's would think I was imagining
getting into the PROCAT system! As for the details regarding READING, MILLS & CARLTON( no refs)? I have'nt checked whether full names or abbreviations are used in this series yet. Are you sayin you did'nt see their names at all? I don't understand why 'records no longer available' should appear,
as far as I know, the PRO retain all the records forever. thats their function, surely? ( I will check them using my reader card log-in and see if that shows any more info).

The PRO does offer a photocopying service, I used it to get hold of my G/G-Fathers records from the WO97 series. The service is offered in their main site, if you put in all the details you know with those references,WO12/9664- 9665 etc. You pay £ 10 Min. If the records contain more pages than the £10 covers they may contact you to see if you will ok it with them to charge more. http://www.pro.gov.uk/recordcopying/default.htm this link is the page with details, terms and conditions,(worth reading, all pricing details) its very comprehensive and easy to understand. The link to the copying details page is also in there. C/Card payment makes things very easy from your end, and should be quite secure. They can also copy your records onto a cd-rom if you so wish!

Do you have any WO/ details about WILLIAM CARLTON or were you just trying his name in the search to see if anything came up? Get back to me if I can be any more help, and if I turn up anything I'll send it on.

Good luck,

Brendan.
