I came across the entry below whilst loooking for something else. You need
to look at the [films of the] actual register entries above, which may, like
this one, give the reason - which would be omitted from the printed
transcripts. The usual reason for a repeat ceremony is because of some
(supposed) doubt about the first.
"Page 177 St Giles in the Fields in the County of Middlesaex
"Richard Snart of this Parish and Frances Robinson of this Parish
(they having been already married by banns in this same Parish, by the Names
of Richard Ross, Bachelor
and Frances Robinson, Spinster ------)
were married in this Church again, by Licence (in order to obviate all
future Doubts as to the validity of the Marriage)
this Seventh Day of July in the Year One Thousand Eight Hundred
and Fourteen; by nme Charles McCarthy, curate
