Subject: EAST END DISASTER

I wonder if there is anyone on the List who has any knowledge of the Canning Town/Plaistow area of East London in or around the first World War.
An elderly relative has just told me that a missing ancestor was, she thought, killed during a factory disaster about the time of the war but she wasn't quite sure when. She thought there had been an explosion which resulted in panic and my ancestor was trampled in the rush to get out of the building.
This is a completely new story to me so I would be very interested to know if anyone has heard of such a catastrophe at the time and in the area mentioned above.
Kind regards; ED.
